Charlotte, NC is a rapidly growing and dynamic city, but has long struggled to bridge a drastic divide between rich and poor residents. Layered on top of these issues, Charlotte is now facing more climate-change-driven heat waves, rain storms and drought that will disproportionately impact the health, safety, and wallets of the city’s working class communities and communities of color. This case study – which was formed through interviews with city leaders and local advocates – looks at the steps Charlotte’s city, community and business leaders can take to reduce climate pollution and create a resilience strategy that is rooted in equity and racial justice.
While this report is specific to Charlotte, the governance, growth, social and climate challenges facing the city as well as the steps leaders and residents can take to augment opportunity are relevant nationwide.
