April is National Garden Month and has been since 2003!

“When You Garden, You Grow!
Every April communities, organizations, and individuals nationwide celebrate gardening during National Garden Month. Gardeners know, and research confirms, that nurturing plants is good for us: attitudes toward health and nutrition improve, kids perform better at school, and community spirit grows. Join the celebration and help to make America a greener, healthier, more livable place!” – National Garden Month

We want to join the global community in celebrating existing gardeners and encouraging new gardeners to get involved with this awesome hobby and start growing your own food. This blog is a tribute to all our Fresh Start Kit owners, who are now all over the country! We thank you for believing in our mission and helping us Grow Food | Grow Community.

It’s wonderful to see people of all ages seeking interest in gardening as a new or continued hobby. Our team has had the chance to interact with everyone from young children to the elderly about our work in the community. Every time someone purchases a Pop Up Produce Fresh Start Kit, new gardeners are learning how to grow food, and helping residents in food deserts learn how to grow food, too. In addition to the socio-economic benefits through our Buy One, Donate One program, we also want to strengthen and support our Kit owners in their growing experience. Besides the awe of witnessing nature at a small scale – seeing seeds grow to sprouts and then to plants – there are many wonderful aspects for one’s individual growth as well.

For instance, did you know gardening provides physical, emotional, and psychological benefits?

Yes, believe it or not, it’s true. According to Eva Shaw, PhD, and author of Shovel It: Nature’s Health Plan,

“Gardening is a great form of exercise. Besides obvious weight lose benefits gardening has been proven to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and decrease depression.”

Our hope is our Fresh Start Kit owners are able to learn about growing and experiment with their starter kit. Our dream is the experience is able to teach our Fresh Start Kit owners about the fundamentals of growing, at a manageable scale with relatively easy-to-grow seed varieties, and empower our Kit owners to take the initiative to start growing other types of seeds too!

In the meantime, you may be asking how can you get involved during National Garden Month?

Well, we want to see your Fresh Start Kits growing!

  • Post a picture on social, tagging @popupproduceclt

  • Use #nationalgardenmonth and #produceprogress

In doing so, we can share your growing experience with others and highlight the wonderful gardening efforts you’re doing! Even if you don’t have recent pictures of your plants growing in their Fresh Start Kits, planters, or in the ground, we’d love to see any and all photos that you have of your sprouts growing!

Here are some of the ones we’ve received along the way. Thanks to all who’ve sent in pictures so far!
