Packaging Party with Delta Zeta
One of the core values of any sorority is philanthropy. Through Delta Zeta’s sorority, the sisters spend a considerable amount of time giving back for our philanthropy, speech and hearing. When The University of North Carolina-Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Phi Chapter heard about the opportunity to volunteer our time with Pop Up Produce, everyone in our chapter was on board. The sisterhood was interested in learning more about Pop Up Produce and how Pop Up Produce’s work helps families in food deserts. UNC Charlotte is close to a food desert; volunteering time with Pop Up Produce’s Packaging Party was the perfect opportunity to give back to a place close to all of our hearts.
Amanda Zullo, Pop Up Produce Founder, was an active Delta Zeta sister at the Kappa Phi chapter during her time in undergraduate school. She recalled spending time volunteering locally for various organizations and efforts to help the local community through Sisterhood events. As a current active sister and Pop Up Produce’s Social Media Coordinator, I thought it would be a great opportunity to unify the Sisterhood through a volunteer event, while giving back and helping Pop Up Produce.
Pop Up Produce brought all the necessary supplies to the Delta Zeta sorority house and a group of about 20 sisters set up shop in the kitchen, helping to put together and package Fresh Start Kits. Amanda shared the story of Pop Up Produce and how the sisterhood is playing such a vital part by donating their time to give back to others. The sisters were briefed on the various roles and stages for the Packaging Party, and then everyone broke up into different groups for delegated jobs. Some sisters labeled small bags for the seeds while others assembled boxes, all of which was done with a smile on everyone’s face. As everyone continued to perform their volunteer role, it was quickly noticeable how big of an impact we, as Delta Zetas, were going to have on our community.
In less than an hour, we had completed so much. All of the boxes were assembled, the small bags were labeled, and everyone was ready for whatever would come next – which wasthe fun part: placing the seeds in the bags. Some sisters found this very easy, others did not. Regardless, we were smiling and laughing our way through the process as it turned into a friendly competition as to who was a better “seed sorter”. It was a very tedious but important part ofthe process, as we had to make sure Fresh Start Kit owners were receiving equal shares of seeds. . The organic, non-GMO seeds are one of the key ingredients in a Fresh Start Kit. As we continued to place seeds in the bags, there was chatter amongst the sisters. Several sisters were really interested in being able to purchase their own Fresh Start Kit. The sisters thought the whole idea was very savvy and for such a great cause. After participating in this Packaging Party, lots of sisters want to have another event, but with even more sisters. Everyone’s favorite part about doing this event with Pop Up Produce was being able to make a difference in our community. As Delta Zeta women, we all look forward to the next Packaging Party with Pop Up Produce.
